Rae was more than just a keeper of the Hula…He was family. He looked at his dancers as though they were part of his immediate family. I remember a time when he told me that my daughter had skipped practice to meet up with a boyfriend and he had seen her walking down from the Halau toward home and he gave her scoldings.
It was not until sometime later that one of her Hula sisters told me that he saw her walking with the boy and jumped up with his ukulele in hand and ran after her. He caught them and smashed his ukulele over the boy’s head ordered him to stay away from his dancers and then proceeded to scold my daughter. She has since told me that she thinks of Rae as a father.
He will be missed so deeply by all that learned to love him how could we not love him.
